Claire's Music Workbook - Basic Edition

Learn to read music and  play piano the easy way.
Ever wanted to read and play music and do not have a teacher or cannot afford piano lessons? This textbook was written by a young lady with several year's teaching experience - you too can learn to play the keyboard and piano by yourself. Comes with easy DIY exercises and modern clear layout but without any colour pictures of animals taking up valuable space. You can use this book for formal music exams, GCSE or for your own fun - play popular tunes on sheet music to easy classics.

From the Preface:

“Claire’s Workbook” has evolved over 25 years’ teaching experience with students from 4 to 72 years of age, and started as single-sheet handouts for use during class. The workbook was developed when these worksheets which were developed specifically for students in a class environment were compiled in a logical sequence. These were developed and improved, then bound together to help students organize their work. Continual improvements were made from feedback and suggestions as a result of tutoring students with differing abilities, backgrounds, ages and experience. Unlike other texts, this workbook was not developed in isolation from the teaching environment but as an active set of solutions to the challenge of explaining the various aspects that constitute the Theory and Rudiments of Music. This workbook is also recommended as a useful preparation for secondary or high school level music courses. This edition now includes a Steelpan supplement with a specially written foreword by Liam Teague, Associate Professor of Music at Northern Illinois University. Steelpan layouts have been kindly supplied by the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards in consultation with Pan Trinbago, the World Governing Body for Steelpan.

This MusicWorkBook® now covers all of the typical theory requirements of the major examining boards of music from introductory to intermediate stages. It must be emphasized however that the workbook endeavours to introduce theory concepts gradually and in stages and to help the novice to read and understand notation and theory rather than merely satisfying a particular board’s requirements exclusively. While teacher guidance is always advisable to obtain the best from the workbook, the design is such that more ambitious students can progress with the minimum of supervision, whether in a formal class, school, privately or working at home at their own rate. Guidelines for teachers, hints and tips for playing pieces and solutions to workpages will be included on the internet: e.g. URL http://www.lulu.com/content/e-book/music-theory-exercises/7251289.

The teaching pages are liberally interspersed with exercise pages to reinforce the concepts introduced. More difficult concepts such as time-signatures and steps/half-steps (tones/semitones) are dealt with diagrammatically. Included is a glossary of Italian and other foreign musical terms. The appendix includes practice pieces, scales and more: over 50 music pieces which are graded in difficulty have been included. These pieces are also suitable for other instruments. While this book is biased towards the piano keyboard because its layout is linear, musical theory and notation is universally applicable to all instruments. Understanding the piano keyboard is the key!

The initial section of the book is aimed for young children and may also be of some help to those visually impaired: older students can skip these pages as required. Each theory lesson is designed to fit one page, after which an exercise page usually follows. As students become more familiar with notation, they can play from the music pages beginning on page 206. These are graded approximately in difficulty. Large fonts and notes are aimed at the younger student while the more standard fonts and notation indicate more advanced material: the aim is that the book can be used by the young as well as the older. The tunes range from traditional to specially written.

Manuscript paper of different pitches and sizes are strategically placed throughout the workbook. These and other pages marked can be freely copied for students’ use in a school or class environment only. A more detailed guide for teachers to the best use of this book is available from the internet – see webpages below. Answers to the question pages will also be available on the sites.

This book is suitable for musical theory for any instrument. For “western” music, we can say
“The principles of musical harmony are the same for all instruments and genres.”

Pocketbook Edition illustrated:

“Claire’s Workbook”™

...has evolved over 15 year’s teaching experience with students from 4 to 72 years of age, and originally started as single-sheet handouts developed on computer as single handouts during class. Over the years, these were improved and developed, and then eventually bound together to help students organize their work.

Thus the “workbook” concept was invented, where real students in a class environment inspired the handouts where active feedback and suggestions abounded and continual improvements made based upon helping different students with widely differing abilities, backgrounds, ages and experience. Thus the workbook was not developed in isolation but as an active set of solutions to the challenge of explaining the various aspects that constitute the theory of music.

Teacher text or student study guide?
This music workbook is suitable for formal class, school, private tuition or working at home at one's own rate. The more ambitious student can progress with the minimum of supervision.
This music textbook is also liberally provided with exercise pages to reinforce the concepts introduced. More difficult concepts such as time-signatures, key-signatures, tones and semitones are dealt with diagrammatically.
There is also a glossary of Italian music terms. In addition there are daily practise pieces. There a few carols but more easy-play carols will be included in future editions. We have already published Claire's Carolbook - 39 Traditional Carols in two easy keys, C Major and G major for easy sightreading and teaching which is important in the limited time of the festive season.
New edition with new arrangements of over 50 carols!

Claire's Workbook is the equivalent of self-teaching books and could easily be entitled "Teach Yourself Music Theory" or "Music Theory for Dum-dums", but who wants to patronise music students who I am sure have a hard and expensive time pursuing this in a modern world.

Theory requirements of popular examining boards up to Grade 3 of the popular examining boards are addressed, the exact level depending on the music exam board.
The music workbook is biased towards piano as the linear keyboard layout is used to explain the logic and structure relating to the music staff, example tones, semitones and their relationship.
This musicworkbook is based on active feedback and suggestions while teaching different students with widely differing abilities, backgrounds, ages and experience.
Claire's workbook is an active set of solutions to the challenge of explaining the various aspects that constitute the "Theory of Music".
